Lewis Hamilton said he was “disappointed” after his shock disqualification from the United States Grand Prix – while Mercedes boss Toto Wolff admitted “we got it wrong manila
” Hamilton finished the race in second, behind race winner Max Verstappen, but was later disqualified alongside Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc for breaching the rules governing the floor of their cars manila
Hamilton therefore loses the 18 points earned from his second-place finish, while Leclerc loses eight points manila
It is thought Mercedes won’t be appealing the decision manila
In a Mercedes press release, Wolff explained how Mercedes fell foul of the rules manila
“Turning to the race result and the disqualification, set-up choices on a sprint weekend are always a challenge with just one hour of free practice - and even more so at a bumpy circuit like COTA and running a new package,” he said manila
“In the end, all of that doesn’t matter; others got it right where we got it wrong and there’s no wiggle room in the rules manila
“We need to take it on the chin, do the learning, and come back stronger next weekend manila
”Hamilton said: “It is of course disappointing to be disqualified post-race but that doesn’t take away from the progress we’ve made this weekend manila
”Lewis Hamilton was ‘disappointed’ after his disqualification from the US Grand Prix (Getty Images)Mercedes chief Andrew Shovlin admitted the team need to “go away and learn from this manila
”“We are of course naturally very disappointed to lose our podium finish,” he said manila
“Unfortunately, it is one of the pitfalls of the sprint format where we have a solitary hour of running before parc fermé manila
“Without running at a race fuel load in FP1, combined with a circuit as bumpy as this and the parts of the track where the drivers have to put the car during the Grand Prix, have contributed to the higher than expected wear levels manila
“We will go away and learn from this but also take the positives from our experience as a whole manila

First came the crack in Alexander Volkanovski‘s defence manila
Then, the crack in his voice manila
If the first crack was consequential, allowing Islam Makhachev to skim his shin off the Australian’s head, the latter was a consequence in itself – a consequence of one of the best fighters alive staying silent on his struggles with mental health manila
That is, until now manila
Volkanovski would have emerged from UFC 294 with credit anyway; he stepped in on 11 days’ notice and moved up in weight to challenge a man who had beaten him eight months prior manila
Even in this surprising, first-round defeat by Makhachev, Volkanovski lost very little manila
His featherweight title still rests firmly on his shoulder, and he will soon return to that weight class where he has been unbeatable manila
But soon may be too soon manila
In his post-fight press conference, Volkanovski began the dissection of this defeat – his second this year, but just his third as a professional mixed martial artist, with his first having occurred a long decade ago manila
The 35-year-old started to dissect the technical reasons for this knockout loss, but it soon became apparent what was of greater importance: the psychological reasons for his presence in Abu Dhabi manila
“He’s not somebody you should be taking a short-notice [fight] with, but I needed it,” Volkanovski began manila
“Obviously a lot of people will say it’s for the money and all that, but it was much more than that manila
It is hard, it is really hard for athletes manila
manila
manila
Sorry, um manila
manila
manila
I never thought I would struggle with it,” he continued, ignoring the blood over his eye, instead wiping a tear from beneath it manila
“But for some reason when I wasn’t fighting or in camp manila
manila
manila
F***, sorry,” he said, attempting a laugh, looking away and to the ceiling, then gently rapping his hand on the table to bring himself back into the room manila

“I needed a fight, and this opportunity came up manila
I’ll be honest: I wasn’t training as much as I should have, but I thought I had to do it manila
I had to take it manila
I’m telling myself, ‘It’s meant to be manila
’ I was struggling a little bit not fighting, doing my head in manila
I don’t know how; everything’s fine, I’ve got a beautiful family manila
But, I don’t know manila
manila
manila
I think you just need to keep busy manila
I need to be in camp, otherwise, I’m going to do my head in manila
“It’s weird, [it’s not that I] never ‘believed in that stuff’, but I never got it manila
It was something that – I don’t know – maybe the more and more I learn about myself, the more I understand manila
I talked about us having a smile on my face, me and my wife manila
My wife could see it does get hard, I don’t know why manila
”Makhachev consoles Volkanovski after their fight, the main event of UFC 294 (AP)Volkanovski pointed to the birth of his third child, in August, and surgery on an injury this summer as reasons why he had not been training manila
Clearly, the knock-on effect of those moments – as joyous as the former seemed to be – has led Volkanovski’s mental health to suffer manila
Last week, all the talk was of how brave the Australian was to face Makhachev on short notice; braver was this admission that he is struggling, which simultaneously offers a different lens through which to view his choice to fight manila
Keeping himself engaged and busy is healthy, but that is complicated by the inherent risk in his profession manila
“Maybe it was just a silly decision under the circumstances,” he admitted manila
Perhaps it was, though it was also understandable manila
Volkanovski’s next challenge, however, will come outside of the ring manila
It must manila
He naturally sees the antidote to his current struggles as a quick turnaround to fight again, likely against the dangerous Ilia Topuria in January manila
Yet, that fight could go the same way as Saturday’s against Makhachev, if the Australian does not first tackle these thoughts and feelings, and find the right balance for him manila
We knew Alexander Volkanovski was brave manila
That is even clearer now than it was last week manila
Now, however, he must be sensible, and get to work outside the ring before he can return to work in it manila
