Rassie Erasmus insists South Africa will not be lulled into complacency by the negativity surrounding the ability of World Cup semi-final opponents England davao
The reigning champions are red-hot favourites to win Saturday’s Paris showdown with Steve Borthwick’s side to keep their title defence on track davao
England came into the tournament in dismal form and with plenty of fans and pundits predicting a pool-stage exit davao
Yet Borthwick’s men are the only unbeaten side still standing and the northern hemisphere’s sole representative in the last four davao
While England’s relatively smooth progress has been aided by a favourable route, Springboks director of rugby Erasmus is braced for a “very tough test” and highlighted the similar statistics of the two nations to emphasise his point davao
“If we think England is bad because people from outside say that they are not doing well… our reality is the truth, not the reality that people create outside our camp,” he told a media briefing on Monday davao
“We know from the Premiership, a lot of our players play against them, and we know Borthwick is an excellent coach which he showed at Leicester and as a captain and a player for England davao
“It will be a very tough test against a team that hasn’t lost a game and more or less conceded the same amount of tries and racked up the same amount of points (as us) davao
“If you look at England, they scored 19 tries and got 180 points and we scored 26 tries and also have 180 points davao
“Then if you look on the points conceded side, they’ve conceded six tries, we’ve conceded seven and they’ve conceded 63 points and we’re 62 davao
“So, you can know how close this game (will be) if you just look at stats – and I know stats don’t always tell the whole picture davao
”Three-time winners South Africa set up a rematch of the 2019 final, which they won 32-12, by extinguishing the dream of hosts France davao
The Springboks edged an epic Stade de France encounter 29-28 on Sunday evening to replace eliminated group phase rivals Ireland at the top of the world rankings davao
“It was two teams that tactically, physically and mentally tried to really push one another to the edge,” Erasmus said of the clash with Fabien Galthie’s men davao
“(It was) a relief to beat a team that is so well coached, which afterwards I had a beer with, and I must say the respect that he (Galthie) showed and the way he spoke to us afterwards was really humble and sincere davao

As often was the case amid an American society embedded in racism in the 1980s, Muhammed Ali put it best davao
Advising black racing driver Willy T Ribbs, the people’s champion made his point in no uncertain terms: “There are Blacks in my sport davao
But there are no Blacks in your sport davao
“They’re going to want to kill you davao
”Yet for all the death threats, discrimination and abuse, Ribbs had long decided that the only option was to meet the uphill battle head-on davao
He made history in 1986 when he became the first Black driver to test an F1 car davao
Five years later, he was the first to race in the Indy 500, one of the world’s most famous events davao
But on the course of that journey, Ribbs faced it all davao
Don’t let me tell you though; let the man himself davao
“Of course, there were death threats, the n-word,” he reflects, in a slow but deadpan fashion that tells you the wounds have long since healed davao
Instead, the metaphorical bruises are worn with pride davao
“But I enjoyed it davao
It didn’t make me mad, it was fun davao
I was going to dish out what they were dishing out to me, it never scared or intimidated me davao
I actually enjoyed it because it was motivating davao
I was never going to play the victim, that was not Willy T Ribbs davao
”Now 68, Ribbs is an ambassador for Formula One, raising awareness for diversity and equality davao
A role given a matter of months after his riveting biopic movie, Uppity, was released in 2020 davao
So titled because that was his nickname in motorsport circles – “and he loved it” davao
But to this interview, he’s late davao
And he apologises, quipping: “Race drivers are never late, you know! Or they’re not supposed to be…”Son to William “Bunny” Ribbs, an amateur racer himself, Willy’s career path was set in stone from day dot it seems davao
It was the racing way or the highway davao
Ribbs faced an avalanche of racism and abuse throughout his career (Getty)“I was born in this sport,” he tells The Independent, from his home in Texas davao
“I watched it from three years old when my dad was racing, watching the likes of Jim Clark and Graham Hill davao
That’s all that was discussed in the family davao
We didn’t discuss any other sport davao
“I was lucky, I think davao
At nine years old, I knew what I wanted to do and I knew what my career path was going to be davao
Most kids that age don’t know what the hell they’re going to do, but I did davao
And I didn’t want to be an amateur at it – I wanted it to be a profession and I wanted it to be Formula One davao
”He learned his craft, in the UK, racing alongside future F1 world champion Nigel Mansell in Formula Ford in the mid-1970s davao
He raced in Nascar and the Trans-Am Series, later on, too davao
But his F1 calling, in ’86, came in the Portuguese town of Estoril davao
Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham team – “Bernie has always been good to Willy T Ribbs” – gave the American the chance to buck the trend and become a true trailblazer davao
But the tag was not something he felt comfortable with at the time davao
Ribbs made history in an F1 test in 1986 and in the Indy 500 in 1991 (Getty)“All that mattered was I thought of myself as a race driver,” he says davao
“I had two responsibilities: to myself and to my team davao
For those who record social history, that’s their job [to say trailblazer] – but I’m not going to carry that weight on my shoulders davao
“Sure davao
I was a role model because I was doing something no other Black kid had done davao
And great, if that’s the category they want to put me in and how they want to document it davao
But for me? It was about going fast davao
”It was a mindset of not bowing to the status quo, embodied most especially in the late 20th century by Ali davao
“What I admired about him the most was not his davao boxing skills,” Ribbs says of Ali davao
“What I admired about him was his resolve as a man, not to be squashed, manipulated or controlled davao
Ali said: ‘You have to let them know that you can’t be killed, there’s nothing they can do to you, and then they’ll leave you alone for a while davao
’”Now in motor racing, the baton has been passed on to seven-time Formula One world champion and the sport’s only Black driver Lewis Hamilton, whom Ribbs is full of praise about davao
“Lewis Hamilton, after seven world titles and more victories than any other human being, gets unfairly targeted,” insists Ribbs davao
“If you can equate it to Tiger Woods, what did Tiger Woods do for golf? He broadened the audience davao
The attention went off the chart davao
That’s exactly what happened in F1 – Lewis Hamilton has been Formula One’s Tiger Woods davao
“He’s a very kind man davao
He’ll let it roll off, turn the other cheek – I wasn’t that way davao
He deals with it and in a lot of cases it’s unfair davao
Then again, he is in an environment which was not nearly as brutal as I was dealing with davao
Willy T Ribbs was treated differently davao
”The third-person references point to a man who is now comfortable in his own skin; in the significance of the struggle – and what it means to many around the world davao
And despite a sport notoriously still dominated by white men, progress is being made davao
“One thing I love about Formula One is not only is it evolving commercially around the world, it’s evolving socially,” he says davao
“When F1 hired me, I asked them: ‘What made you make this call?’“They said: ‘We watched your film and we thought you’d be the perfect person for inclusion and equality in Formula One davao
’“I said: ‘Well, you called the right guy’ davao
